Our client, a leading accessories brand, is looking for an Industrial designer to join their team in NYC!
Responsibilities
- Lead the complete industrial design process for IoT and consumer technology products, taking concepts from initial sketches through to full-scale production.
- Partner closely with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineering teams to ensure design intent aligns with hardware requirements, including PCB layouts, antenna positioning, and sensor integration.
- Create production-ready CAD models, exploded views, and precise technical documentation to guide manufacturing.
- Specify materials, finishes, and manufacturing methods that deliver the right balance of quality, cost efficiency, durability, and optimal wireless performance (e.g., plastics selected for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi transparency).
- Apply best practices in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) for both high-volume products and limited-edition premium releases.
- Oversee prototyping, tooling development, pilot production, and field testing to confirm design quality and performance benchmarks.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners to improve yield rates and resolve challenges related to electronics assembly, housing fit, and CMF (color, material, finish) consistency.
- Stay informed on IoT developments, smart home ecosystem trends, compliance requirements (FCC/CE), and advances in production technologies.
- Drive CMF strategy to maintain a cohesive and premium brand identity across all product categories.
Qualifications
- 7+ years in industrial design, including at least 5 years specializing in consumer electronics or IoT hardware.
- Strong portfolio highlighting successful launches of both mass-market and high-end products.
- Mastery of CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, Rhino, or Fusion 360, along with rendering software like KeyShot or V-Ray.
- In-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, CNC machining, die casting, sheet metal fabrication, and overmolding.
- Proven track record of working alongside mechanical and electrical engineers on complex product assemblies.
- Skilled in designing with electronics constraints in mind—thermal management, EMI shielding, battery layout, waterproofing, and more.
- Expertise in DFM/DFA principles and experience managing overseas manufacturing for large-scale production.
- Excellent communicator able to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
Preferred
- Background in designing for connected ecosystems such as smart home devices, tablets, and tech accessories.
- Understanding of firmware and hardware development cycles, plus experience with rapid electronics prototyping.
- Knowledge of sustainable materials and environmentally responsible manufacturing methods.
