Position Summary:
The Industrial Designer is a unique role that blends creative design with mechanical and industrial engineering, driving New Product Development and continuous improvement. This role will work in a dynamic, customer-focused environment, emphasizing creativity, technical execution, and cross-functional collaboration while ensuring alignment with Maverick Boat Group’s business goals and prioritizing product quality, design, and innovation.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Maintain awareness of design trends in small saltwater craft (16’ to 40’) including center consoles, dual consoles, bay boats, and technical skiffs, to ensure designs are contemporary and relevant.
- Work with Sales teams to translate the voice of the customer, market trends, and usage cases into contemporary designs that exceed customer expectations.
- Identify and integrate key product 'must-haves' by analyzing customer expectations, emerging usage cases, and cross-segment trends to drive innovative and market-relevant designs.
- Lead product development brainstorming sessions to create conceptual product themes and define overarching design concepts.
- Develop concept boards and mood boards that communicate the design theme, combining sketches, colors, textures, materials, and imagery to represent the conceptual direction of the product.
- Regularly develop sketches, renderings, and 3D CAD models to support the product development effort, ensuring designs accurately convey both form and function.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (sales, marketing, engineering, and operations) to establish design requirements and ensure alignment across departments.
- Work with engineering resources to execute design solutions, ensuring no compromise on style or innovation while addressing form and function challenges. Collaborate with engineering teams early in the design process to assess feasibility and validate design concepts.
- Provide design concepts for boat exteriors and interiors, considering aesthetics, functionality, durability, and overall quality to enhance the customer experience.
- Facilitate the development of both proof-of-concept models and full-scale mockups or prototypes to assess, refine, and validate design ideas, ergonomics, and overall product features at different stages of the design process.
- Lead material, texture, and color selections for key product components (e.g., vinyl, soft grip, TPU), working closely with product engineers to ensure the highest quality and relevance.
- Manage multiple simultaneous design projects, ensuring they meet deadlines, cost targets, and quality standards throughout the New Product Development (NPD) process.
- Coordinate and oversee communication with outside suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and that design intent is met in production.
- Lead regular design reviews, confidently defending design decisions to maintain the overall vision, while being open to feedback from cross-functional stakeholders to continuously improve and refine the product.
- Ensure the successful integration of designs from concept to production, providing process engineering and production teams with the detailed information needed to build new products.
- Investigate system/product weaknesses and provide solutions to continuously improve products and prevent recurring issues.
- Thrive in a fast-paced design environment, balancing multiple projects and adapting to evolving goals, with the ability to take initiative and work independently when needed to drive successful outcomes.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: BSME, Industrial Design or related degree from ABET accredited University. A minimum of 4 years’ experience in design and product development. A minimum of 4 years’ experience in boat building and/or designing. A minimum of 4 years’ experience in 3D modeling, Rhino, NX or SolidWorks is preferred.
Must be able to provide a portfolio of previous work. Must be able and willing to travel 3 to 4 times per year for trade shows, dealer meetings, design events, etc.
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. As well as draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to think critically and do so under a limitation of time.Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
