Our client, a design agency, is currently seeking an Industrial Designer with a focus on retail displays to join their team on a freelance basis for 3-4 months. This will be a 40 hour week assignment and you must have your own laptop! They are open to either fully remote, or if NYC based then ideally onsite 1 day per week.
Overview
Design and execute brand and retailer specific display concepts for an exciting array of brands in both the prestige and mass retail channels. You will drive projects from concept through production while coordinating tasks across design, engineering, and fabrication teams. The ideal candidate blends an Industrial Design/ POP background with exceptional graphic and 3-D skills, a sophisticated eye for contemporary retail, and a strong grasp of merchandising strategy and shopper behavior.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualize & design cosmetic retail displays and fixtures, including prestige-inspired retail walls, gondolas, and graphic systems that establish clear competitive brand differentiation
- Create mood & vision boards translating brand equities into compelling CMF palettes, typographic systems, and storytelling hierarchies
- Model & render high-fidelity 3-D environments (SketchUp, 3ds Max,, Solidworks or Rhino) to validate sightlines, planograms, and shopper flow
- Prepare design control drawing - dimensioned mechanicals, BOMs, and material specs -for engineering and vendor bid packages
- Research category & consumer trends to inspire innovation in navigation, interactivity, and regimen-building strategies on a project basis
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (rendering, engineering, sales) in concept development
Qualifications
- 7+ years of industrial design experience
- Retail display and merchandising experience is preferred
- Sophisticated aesthetic sensibility; able to articulate design vision through sketches, storyboards, and polished presentations
- Expert-level Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) for graphics, information hierarchy, and production art
- Proficiency in at least one 3-D software (SketchUp, 3ds Max, or Rhino)
- Ability to generate technical design control drawings using CAD software (Solidworks, etc.)
- Deep understanding of materials, finishes, lighting, and mass-production processes for metal, acrylic, and injection-molded components
