Job Title: Industrial Design Intern
Location: San Francisco, California (Office on Market street)
Company: Spacer Robotics
Type: Internship, Full-time
Duration: 3–6 months, Summer/Fall 2025
Compensation: Unpaid, with opportunity of full-time employment at the end of the internship based on performance
About Spacer Robotics
Spacer Robotics is building the future of construction—from the Moon to Earth. Our mission is to create fully autonomous, non-humanoid robotic systems capable of building a lunar base with zero human intervention. We are pioneering a new Deep Tech design philosophy aimed at disrupting the $13.5 trillion global construction industry.
We operate at the frontier of robotics, design, and systems engineering. If you’re excited about turning science fiction into engineering reality, this is your invitation.
Position Overview
We’re looking for a bold, creative, and engineering-minded Industrial Design Intern to help us shape the physical identity of Spacer’s robotic platforms. In this role, you’ll work closely with our engineering, product, and brand teams to design the form, user interface, and visual language of our robots—balancing rugged functionality, robust and durable feel with elegant simplicity.
From conceptual sketches to 3D surfacing, you’ll contribute to the look and feel of machines designed to build the future in the harshest environments known.
What You’ll Do
- Translate functional requirements into compelling form factors and design concepts
- Create sketches, storyboards, mockups, and 3D models of robotic components and systems
- Collaborate with mechanical and systems engineers to ensure feasibility and manufacturability
- Design for environmental constraints (e.g., lunar dust, zero atmosphere, thermal cycles)
- Develop UI/UX concepts for human-robot interactions (even in remote supervision contexts)
- Participate in internal reviews, incorporating feedback across design, engineering, and brand
- Contribute to the design language, visual brand identity, and physical interfaces of our platforms
What We’re Looking For
- Pursuing a degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Factors, or a related field or a recent graduate.
- Strong sketching skills
- Strong portfolio showcasing 3D form exploration, user-centric design, and physical interface thinking
- Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., Rhino, SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and rendering software (Keyshot, Blender, etc.)
- Ability to communicate ideas visually and verbally across cross-functional teams
- Interest in robotics, space exploration, or advanced industrial systems
- Independent thinker with a collaborative and flexible mindset
Bonus If You Have
- Experience designing hardware for robotics, aerospace, or ruggedized environments
- Understanding of DFM, materials, and fabrication methods
- Familiarity with UX/UI design tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD)
- Interest in speculative design, near-future tech, or frontier interfaces
Why Join Us?
- Help shape the identity of the first robotic systems built to operate autonomously on the Moon
- Work alongside engineers, scientists, and designers building radical Deep Tech
- Gain experience in building products in 0 to 1 startup environment
- Gain experience in full lifecycle design—from concept to prototyping
- Potential for full-time conversion based on performance and alignment
