Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Prototype Designer to join our dynamic team in the consumer product industry. In this role, you will support the creation, development, and testing of innovative prototypes including items such as Dollhouses, play kitchens, backyard wooden swing sets and playhouses. You would collaborate closely with product designers, graphic designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a passion for hands-on problem-solving and bringing creative ideas to life.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design, fabrication, and assembly of prototypes for consumer products using tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, Wood shop tools, painting, and hand tools.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product concepts into functional prototypes.
- Conduct basic testing and evaluation of prototypes to identify design flaws, material issues, or performance improvements.
- Document prototyping processes, including materials used, assembly steps, and test results.
- Support iterative design changes based on feedback from testing and stakeholder reviews.
- Maintain and organize prototyping lab equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient workspace.
- Stay updated on emerging prototyping technologies and materials relevant to the consumer product industry.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 0-2 years of experience in prototyping, product development, or a related role (internships or academic projects count!).
- Basic wood working skills and basic knowledge of woodshop machinery.
- Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) for designing prototype components.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping tools such as 3D printers, CNC machine, table saw, paint applications, or basic machining equipment is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a keen eye for detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment.
- Basic knowledge of materials (Wood, plastics, metals, textiles) commonly used in consumer products.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Experience with electronics integration (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi) for smart consumer products.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes like injection molding or die casting.
